Aquatic Animal Lovers Needed—Become a Volunteer!

The New York Aquarium and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation's Hudson River Estuary Program are teaming up to survey American eels, specifically their migrating fry called "glass eels", in local waterways. The species is in decline over much of its range and baseline studies, like this one, are crucial for management. At NYA, we are looking for motivated volunteers (age 15+) to help us collect valuable information about this species along the south Brooklyn coastline.

Project volunteers will work with the NYA Education Department to check for glass eels at predetermined sites along the south Brooklyn coastline during the late winter and spring seasons (Sunday February 22nd - Sunday May 31st, 2015). This is a great opportunity for students interested in a career in marine conservation to gain valuable science research experience outdoors while learning more about our local marine ecosystem.

All volunteers must be able to attend one 3-hour Orientation Workshop (held at the NYA) on Wednesday January 28th or Sunday February 1st, 2015 from 1pm to 4pm. Alternate days may be possible for those individuals with scheduling conflicts. In addition, participants must be able to volunteer their time for at least two (2) field visits (either Wednesdays or Sundays) during the project season.

For more information, download our recruitment flyer.
