Southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), also known as California sea otters, are native to the coast of California. The New York Aquarium is proud to provide a home for rescued sea otters, including our three current residents.

What happened to the exhibit panel? One of our otters got a little too excited playing with a rock (a totally natural behavior!) and cracked the inner layer of the viewing glass. The glass is mulit-layered and secure, and everything is safe for the otters as we work on future repairs.
