Coral Reef

Sometimes tunnel vision is a good thing. Like when it puts you smack dab in the middle of this colorful coral reef, surrounded by blacktip reef sharks, butterflyfish, and zebra sharks swimming above you.

SHARK MYSTERIES

How do sharks breathe? How do they reproduce? How do they move? How close do they live to NYC? (Hint: very). Explore the exhibit for answers, fun facts, and close-ups of the faces that swim beneath the surface!

In the Exhibit

Sand Tiger Shark

With a mouthful of sharp teeth, and large size, sand tiger sharks may look ferocious, but they are actually fairly docile and aren’t considered dangerous to humans.

Sandbar Shark

Sandbar sharks are easily recognized by their high, triangular dorsal fin. Unlike many other sharks, they give birth to live young.

Nurse Shark

Thanks to their ability to pump water through their gills, nurse sharks can take long resting periods on the seafloor. They play a vital role in coral reef ecosystems.
