Destination: Wonder

Roller coasters, fireworks, hot dogs. Eleven million people visit Coney Island each year to enjoy its local treasures. But just off the boardwalk, there are other, less familiar ones. Sea turtles, sharks, and harbor seals. Deep-sea canyons and soaring seamounts. As the New York Aquarium begins a new chapter in its history, we are bringing New Yorkers closer to the ocean wonders in their own backyard, connecting the Brooklyn boardwalk with its seascape like never before.

Nurse Shark

Among hundreds of new animals, nurse sharks like this one will swim in the New York Aquarium in 2016.

Construction on the aquarium has begun. We've broken ground on a brand new, 57,000 square-foot building that will house over 100 species of amazing marine life.

It has been a long road since Hurricane Sandy ravaged the New York Aquarium in October 2012. But the storm also spurred a new chapter in our history.

Reopening

The large outpouring of local support we received enabled us to bounce back from the storm. Those efforts are a source of inspiration as we build New York’s next great destination.

Reopening

Seven months after Sandy, we reopened our doors. Sea lions and spectators reveled in the moment. The Aquarium remains the only Coney Island attraction open all year.

Building the Next Chapter

The New York Aquarium is poised to play a pivotal role in building a stronger, more resilient New York. Ground has already been broken on the exciting transformation. And it comes at the perfect time. Since Hurricane Sandy struck our shores in October 2012, we've seen the city rally around smarter coastal planning, renewable energy solutions, and marine conservation. The future looks bright.

Wrapping the entire exterior of Ocean Wonders: Sharks! will be the shimmer wall, a mesmerizing work of art. Its individual tiles use wind and reflective sunlight to create a fluid, glittering surface reminiscent ocean waves and schools of fish.

The shimmer wall will be the centerpiece of our new home, a beacon to the millions of visitors inspired by our ocean treasures and dazzling shoreline. We invite you to be part of the transformation.
