The New York Aquarium’s roly-poly walrus calf was born at 4:17 p.m. on June 12, 2007 to Pacific walrus Kulusiq. The baby’s arrival heralded many firsts—for Kulu, for the New York Aquarium, and for aquariums around the world. Of just ten walrus calves to be born at an aquarium, only five have survived—Kulu’s boy marks the sixth. This astonishing birth is also the first in history to be filmed.
